CPEng New Zealand Eligibility Criteria

Becoming a CPEng (Chartered Professional Engineer) in New Zealand is itself a proud achievement. It is because you will have global recognition for your expertise in your engineering, as this status is given only to those who have proven their expertise in their engineering field.

Eligibility criteria:

All engineers do have the opportunity to become a Chartered Engineer, as it’s easy with the same assessment is for all. Engineering New Zealand provides different categories for a professional, technologist, technician or geologist.

Professional Engineer:

Complex engineering problems and activities

·        Washington Accord (four-year BE) or equivalence

·        Chartered Member

·        IntPE(NZ)/APEC Engineer

·        CPEng

Engineering Technologist:

Widely-defined engineering activities and problems

·        Sydney Accord (three-year BEngTech) or equivalence

·        Chartered Member (Eng. Technologist)

·        IntET(NZ)

 

Engineering Technician

Broadly-defined engineering activities and problems

·        Dublin Accord (two-year NZDE) or equivalence

·        Chartered Member (Eng. Technician)

·        IntETn(NZ)

Engineering Geologist:

Complicated engineering geological problems and activities

·        Recognized postgraduate qualification in Engineering Geology

·        Chartered Member (PEngGeol)

Mutual recognition:

If having an engineering registration with a signatory to the Washington, Dublin or Sydney Accord, then you can have direct entry into Chartered Membership.

Knowledge assessment:

If not having a Washington Accord-recognized qualification, you can show equivalent knowledge for entry into Professional Engineer (Chartered Membership or Chartered Professional Engineer) by going through a knowledge assessment.

If not having a Sydney or Dublin Accord-recognized qualification, you will have your equivalent knowledge assessed as part of your Chartership assessment.

Two ways for Chartership: membership or registration:

You will two ways to get yourself Chartered as a professional engineer. The first one is through Engineering New Zealand membership as a Chartered Member, also called CMEngNZ or by means of registration as a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng).

Engineering New Zealand Chartered Member class offers a general quality mark of professionalism with all the membership benefits.

The registration as a CPEng provides a mark of current competence that is based on legislation. You can be both a Chartered Member and CPEng or only one.

Charges and fees (excluding GST):

Chartered assessment (CPEng NZ) $1,565.00

Knowledge assessment $1,175.00 (necessary if you applying for Chartered Member and don’t have a Washington Accord-recognized qualification or accredited equivalent).

The yearly fee is $525.00

If joining part-way via Engineering New Zealand financial year (1 October to 30 September), the authority pro-rates the annual fee monthly. When this membership comes up for renewal on 1 October, the assessment authority will send an invoice for the new financial year.

If on a career break or retired, then request a discounted rate on your yearly fee.
