How to apply for APEGS professional registration:

If you have never had registration as a professional geoscientist or engineer in Canada, you need to first apply as a geoscientist-in-training or engineer-in-training before applying for professional registration. You have to do so even if you have a tremendous amount of experience. 

In case of have been already licensed as a professional geoscientist or engineer in Canada, you need to apply through Inter-Association Mobility.

In case of having been licensed as a professional engineer in Hong Kong, Australia, Mexico, or the United States, you may be eligible for a simple registration process through international mobility agreements. Hire an APEGS expert to know more about this.

Make an account:

For registration with APEGS, the first thing you need to do is to create an account.

To be kept in mind: If having applied to APEGS in the past, it means you must be already having an account. Click Login on the top right corner of the official page to reach your online profile. If you have forgotten your registration number, contact us.

Geoscientist-in-Training: In the APEGS process, if you become a geoscientist-in-training, then it is the first step to registration as a professional geoscientist, no matter how much experience you have. To become a geoscientist-in-training, you need to prove that you have fulfilled the academic requirement for licensure as a professional geoscientist.

Engineer-in-Training: In the APEGS process, becoming an engineer-in-training is the first step that leads to full registration as a licensed professional engineer (certified professional engineer), no matter how much experience you have. For becoming an engineer-in-training, you need to prove that you have satisfied the academic requirement for licensure as a professional engineer.

Geoscience/engineering licensee: If not having the academic background to satisfy the academic requirement for licensure but have professional-level experience in engineering or geoscience, you might qualify to become a geoscience/engineering licensee. The license of this type will allow you to independently practice professional engineering or professional geoscience with a particular scope that is on your license.

Professional engineer/geoscientist:

If you have already been registered as a geoscientist-in-training or engineer-in-training with APEGS, and you have satisfied all the requirements to become a professional, you need to apply to have your professional license.

Inter-Association Mobility:

If having already been licensed in another province or territory in Canada, then you can have an easier application process. Hire an APEGS specialist to know more about this.

International mobility:

In case of having been licensed as a professional engineer in Hong Kong, Ireland, Australia, Mexico, Ireland, or the USA, you might be eligible for a simple registration process by means of International Mobility agreements.

Work Experience Reporting:

If an engineer-in-training or geoscientist-in-training, have your work assessed before being able to become a professional.

Professional Practice Exam (NPPE):

If you are a geoscientist-in-training or engineer-in-training, you need to pass the professional practice exam before you become capable of becoming a professional.  NPPE confirms knowledge of the law, professionalism, and ethics that are related to the practice of professional engineering or professional geoscience.

Permission to Consult:

If offering consulting solutions directly or indirectly, you need to apply for Permission to Consult.

Temporary licensee:

You may be qualified to apply as a temporary licensee if you are a licensed professional engineer in Mexico or Texas. Such license is only provided for up to 3 years.

Things to remember when applying for registration:

Ensure that your CV is up to date, and it includes the main job positions, tasks, and attainments over the time of work experience you claim (a minimum of four years). It will save your time when it comes to filling up the Employment History for and choosing tasks.

Ensure that you keep track of all your CPD goals and projects.
