Initial Steps Before Applying For APEGS CBA
APEGS, the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists in Saskatchewan, uses the APEGS CBA system to assess the work experience of a candidate. So, if you are planning to get your work experience evaluated, then you must know what this system is. Apart from that, we will also tell you about the initial steps you need to take before applying. So, read this whole article carefully.
Transition
from Paper-Based Reporting to CBA:
In the case of having started reporting
your experience in the old paper-based system, you can complete your reporting
in that system or, ideally, move to the new competency-based assessment CBA (APEGS competency assessment) system.
If you have not begun your experience reporting, you must go for the online CBA
system.
You should get your assessment result
within a period of 6 to 8 weeks after the submission of your report. If there
are some omissions or errors in the report, the authority will let you know,
and you have to submit the report again.
Initial
steps before you apply:
Make sure that your CV is up to date and
includes key job roles, projects, and attainments over the period of work
experience you are claiming (at least 4 years). It will save you time in
completing the Employment History and choosing projects to use as examples in
the Competency Self-Assessment. (To be kept in mind: a project doesn’t need to
be completed to use it as a competency example).
You must make sure that you maintain a
record of all of your CPD goals and activities.
Become familiar with the Competency
Framework and its Indicators/Workplace Examples (including any discipline-specific
indicators available for your area of practice for engineering). They are in
the Competency Self-Assessment section of the online system for reference.
For major learning activities, have some
time to reflect briefly on the major learning that you earned including how it
may have impacted your practice and contributed to the demonstration of
competency within any of the Competency Categories.
There is an optional tutorial in the APEGS CBA system for engineering
applicants in the drop-down menu after you have logged in. A tutorial for
geoscientists will be in the future.
Roles
and Responsibilities:
The following are the roles and
responsibilities of all the participants in the APEGS CBA system:
Applicant:
·
An applicant offers work
experience details through the Competency Assessment System, including work
experience chronology and specific examples to address each Competency.
·
They provide self-assessed
Competence Level for each Competency as per the Competency Rating Scale.
·
Applicants give contact
information for a minimum of four people to as act Validators to verify and
offer feedback on their competency assessment. For those validators who are not
given specific competencies to validate, they give an overall assessment. For
instance, if the applicant provided examples from only one supervisor, that
supervisor validates all the examples and the other three Validators offer
general comments and answer the general reference questions included in the
Competency-Based assessment system. An applicant can’t act as their validator.
·
The applicant provides
information if they are asked to provide it.
Validators:
(employer/supervisor/ colleague/client: ideally P.Eng. or P.Geo. supervisor)
A validator confirms the work experience
information of which they have personal knowledge.
They offer Competence Level ratings for
Competencies to which they are assigned by applicants (if applicable).
They provide overall feedback about the
applicant’s readiness for professional registration.
Assessors
(eligible APEGS volunteers in the applicant’s area of practice):
An assessor reviews the applicant’s
submission and the Validator’s feedback.
They offer ratings for each Competency.
They also make a recommendation on the applicant’s
readiness for professional registration.
