CPEng New Zealand Assessment Process
Attaining a CPEng status in New Zealand comes with many benefits. That’s why more and more engineers these days are applying for this credential. Process:
If you are going through a Chartered
assessment, then your application will go through the following six stages of
the assessment process:
1. Eligibility:
for eligibility to apply for a Chartership, you need to have a Washington
Accord-accredited qualification (in New Zealand, it is an accredited Bachelor
of Engineering (Honours) or proof of having equal knowledge.
2. Preparation:
it usually consumes between four and six years to attain sufficient experience
to be ready to apply to become a Chartered Professional
Engineer. To fulfill the minimum standard for registration, you
must demonstrate that you can practice competency in your practice area to the
standard of a reasonable professional engineer.
3. Apply online:
Engineering New Zealand carries out first-time Chartered assessments in defined
periods throughout the year.
4. Validation:
One of the authority’s Competence Assessment Advisors will check the
information you have given and will try to give you feedback within a period of
10 working days. They will tell you if you need any changes before your
application is sent to an Assessment Panel.
5. Evaluation:
when your application is finalized, an assessment panel will be assigned to
you. The panel will review your application over 8 to 10 weeks and as a part of
this, may meet with you for discussion about it as well.
6. Decision:
your advisor will tell you the proposed outcome of your application. If
positive, your name will appear on the authority’s Find an engineer public
register. On the other hand, if your application is not successful or the CAB
made an alternative decision, you will get the opportunity to respond.

Fees
and charges (Excluding GST):
The fee for Chartered assessment is
$1,565.00.
The knowledge assessment fee is $1, 175, 00
(required if you are applying for Chartered Member and are without a Washington
Accord-accredited qualification or recognized equivalent).
The annual fee is $525.00.
If you join partway through the financial
year (1 October-30 September), the authority pro-rates the annual fee on a
monthly basis. When your membership comes up for renewal on 1 October, the
authority will send an invoice for the new financial year.
In the case of being on a career break or
retired, you can ask the authority for a discounted rate on your annual rate.
