A Chartered Professional Engineer is an experienced engineer, and they have been assessed as fulfilling a quality mark of competence. It is proof that engineers can deal with complex engineering issues that need expert technical knowledge. These experienced engineers are bound to be reassessed at least every six years for the maintenance of their CPEng status.

CPEng engineers have to show New Zealand-specific technical experience. However, this title is a competence mark that has worldwide recognition.

‘Chartered Professional Engineer’ is a protected status, and its holders have registration with the Registration Authority for Chartered Professional Engineers, and they are bound to stick to a Code of Ethical Conduct.

 Code of Ethical Conduct:

The registration authority takes professionalism and ethics very seriously. According to that, its engineers are responsible for their work on behalf of the public of New Zealand. These ethics are based on professional competence, personal integrity and social responsibility. Engineering New Zealand members must adhere to the code and commit to it each year.

Its Code of Ethical Conduct sketches the high standards of ethical behaviour that are expected from all members of Engineering New Zealand.

·        Report adverse consequences

·        Behave appropriately

·        Report a breach of the code

Every Engineering New Zealand member has to strictly follow the code. Those who are registered as CPEng are also subject to a separate but identical code. This code is not for those engineers who are not members of Engineering New Zealand or registered as Chartered Professional Engineers.

Eligibility criteria:

We have provided below the eligibility criteria for the CPEng status:

·        Possessing a Washington Accord-accredited qualification (Bachelor of Engineering, Honours) or being able to show an equal amount of knowledge is a must.

·        You are required to go through an assessment to prove that you satisfy the competency standard.

·        You must have a reassessment at least every 6 years for the maintenance of your CPEng status.

·        You are committed to the Code of Ethical Conduct of CPEng.

 

It’s not mandatory for you to be a member of Engineering New Zealand to apply.

Assessment:

Before the formal submission of your application, the authority will ask you to submit your draft application for a member of its assessment team to check. It’s an important step providing you with feedback on methods you might improve your application, so you will have more chances to become successful.

After the online submission of your application, a panel of your peers will do the following:

Assessment of your application against international competency standards.

Fixing a meeting with you.

Potentially asking you to give more information.

Receiving feedback from your referees.

Writing a report with recommendations to the Competence Assessment Board, also called CAB.
