What Are The Conditions For A PEO Provisional Licence
A PEO provisional licence may be granted to an applicant for a professional engineer (P.Eng.) licence who has fulfilled all the licensing requirements besides the minimum 12 months of verifiable and acceptable engineering experience in a Canadian jurisdiction, under the supervision of a professional engineer who has been licensed in the jurisdiction in which the work was taken on.
Eligibility
criteria:
To be eligible for a provisional licence, a
P. Eng. licence applicant will have:
·
Passed PEO’s National
Professional Practice Examination;
·
Fulfilled PEO’s academic
requirements for licensing; and
·
Showed to PEO’s
satisfaction a minimum of 36 months of acceptable and verifiable engineering
experience outside of Canada.
Provisional
licence conditions:
As per section 44.1(2) of Regulation
941/1990: the below-listed conditions apply to every provisional licence:
The provisional licence has validity for 12
months from the issuance date. This licence can be renewed once for up to 12
months if the Registrar is of the opinion that renewal is necessary to allow
the applicant to attain the experience necessary by paragraph 3 of subsection
33 (1).
The provisional licence holder has the
right to practice professional engineering only under the professional
engineer’s supervision, and the holder shall not issue a final drawing, plan,
specification, report or other documents unless the supervising professional
engineer also signs, dates and affixes their seal to it.
A provisional licence provides the holder
with the authority to practice professional engineering in Ontario only under
the supervision of a professional engineer who is licensed in the Ontario
province.
How
to attain a PEO provisional licence?
If you fulfill the eligibility requirements
for a provisional licence and want to get one, you need to request it by
writing to PEO. Your written request needs to include your full name, your PEO
file number and your signature.
You bear the responsibility for making sure
that PEO has your current experience record on file and your referee response
forms. If Professional Engineers Ontario
doesn’t have a current and complete detailed engineering experience record,
provide one with your request for a provisional licence.
PEO may need you to attend an Experience
Requirements Committee interview before providing you with a provisional
licence.
When you have been approved for a
provisional licence, the authority will invoice you the provisional licence
registration fee of $339 ($300.00 + HST).
The authority may issue a provisional
licence to applicants who have fulfilled all the requirements for licensing as
a professional engineer besides the 12 months of acceptable engineering
experience in a Canadian jurisdiction under the supervision of a licensed
professional engineer. This licence is valid for 12 months from the issuance
date, and it may be renewed for an extra 12 months only under special
circumstances as determined by the Registrar.
To
be kept in mind:
The provisional licence will no longer be
provided as of May 15, 2023. Due to upcoming changes to PEO’s P.Eng. licensing
process, including the removal of the Canadian engineering experience
requirement, the provisional licence will no longer be provided from May 15,
2023.
An existing holder of a provisional licence
will be deemed to have fulfilled the P.Eng. licensing requirements and will be
provided with a P.Eng. licence.
